THE THIRD ESTATE - DEVIL'S TANGO
Author: D. R. Berlin
Reviewer: Florence Osmund
The Hook
Center, balance, focus, and reset. This is Captain Sophie Allard’s mantra whenever she needs to take control of herself and the situation, which happens frequently in THE THIRD ESTATE - DEVIL'S TANGO.
Plot Summary
Captain Sophie Allard, a military medical student working in a civilian trauma center, wants to be a doctor—a far cry from her former self as a fighter jet pilot. When a John Doe dies in the ER of the hospital during one of her shifts, certain authorities believe she had something to do with it, causing her life to take a drastic turn.
Kai Lovac, who once had close ties to the Third Estate—an undercover operative that influences government agencies by infiltrating them—wants desperately to connect with Sophie. She has information he wants, and he believes he can give her something valuable in return. But her knowledge of his unscrupulous past, and in particular the grief he caused for her and her family, causes her to question his motives.
Assessment
This book has no shortage of tension, drama, conflict, and crises—all driving forces that move the story forward. Both main characters want something badly, will do anything to get it, but run into seemingly insurmountable obstacles. This turmoil sets them into motion to make choices that reveal traits about themselves, ones that are powerful points of connection and compelling to the story. It is particularly interesting to observe how their perspectives change as things happen to them and those around them—a satisfying element of good fiction writing.
THE THIRD ESTATE - DEVIL'S TANGO includes a high-stakes narrative that is multifaceted, one that will have readers entertained and emotionally embroiled. The colorful characters and vivid settings allow visualization of the events as they take place and anticipation as to what happens next.
This absorbing story is built upon protagonist Sophie Allard and her past life in the military. While THE THIRD ESTATE - DEVIL'S TANGO can stand on its own, it would be advantageous to read the author’s first book, THE THIRD ESTATE - SECRETS OF THE MANOR for a better understanding of all the players and Sophie’s behaviors and motivations in this second book of the series.
